Die klas is vir kwilters wat ’n basiese kennis van vryhandkwiltwerk (free motion quilting - FMQ) het. Stap vir stap aanwysings hoe om stensils te gebruik om blokke, tussenstroke (sashing) en randstroke (borders) te vul. Leer die verskillende merkmetodes wat gebruik word. Gebruik ¼” (6mm) liniale saam met die stensils. Liniale kan gebruik word om meer sekuur te wees, maar dit is opsioneel en nie ’n vereiste nie. Indien die student liniale wil gebruik, is die liniaalvoetjie ’n móét. Maak ’n stensilvoorbeeldkwilt (sampler) in die klas.

The compulsory kit contains a workshop handout.
- Basic Sewing Supplies
- Practice Blocks:
o 5 x squares of fabric for the top = 12 inch x12 inch
o 5 squares of batting = 16 inch x 16 inch
o 5 squares of fabric for the backing = 16 inch x 16 inch
Use Calico or Sheeting for the top and backing and thin Loomtex 100g for the batting. If you are not sure about the batting or how to do a quilt sandwich, bring what you have to class and we can discuss it.
- Fabric for sampler:
o 1 x square of a solid colour quilting fabric for the top =17.5 inch x 17.5 inch to make a sampler quilt. (Please add an extra 2 inch in length and width for squaring up at the end.)
o 1 x square of fabric for backing = 25 inch x 25 inch
o 1 x square of Loomtex 100g batting = 25 inch x 25 inch
- Polyester Machine Embroidery Thread like Glide, Isacord or Marathon – 2 or more different colours
- Bobbins wound with Bobbin Thread
- Quilting gloves
- Scissors
- Marking tools for dark and light fabric like chalk pens, water erasable blue pens or purple air erasable pen
- Quilt Pounce for marking the lines ( if you have one)
- Quilt marking stencils
- Straight-line ¼ inch-thick longarm ruler (only if you have a ruler foot for your machine and know how to stitch with rulers)
- Long ruler for measuring purposes like a Quilting Ruler with 60° and 45° lines
- Paper and pencil for drawing and taking notes
- Chair cushion
- Safety pins to baste the quilt sandwich – you also can baste the quilt sandwich at home with spray adhesive
- Machine needles
- Sewing machine in good working order;
o Manual,
o Extension table,
o Walking foot,
o Free-motion quilting presser foot.
o VERY IMPORTANT! If you want to use a ¼ inch longarm ruler, you must use a ruler presser foot for domestic machines.
- Extension cord, 15 amp plug or adaptor, surge protector plug
