Details

We will firstly create the background for the tree(s).  This stylised scene from nature will be created by piecing the different size smaller pieces into 12 bigger squares.  The initial 9.5-inch squares will be cut into different sized smaller squares and rectangles.  Exact written instructions will be provided in class for the cutting and the arrangement of the newly cut pieces.

These smaller pieces will be sewn together to form the bigger squares and ultimately your quilt top.  You will add some raw edge applique to suggest a trunk and branches.  If you can cut accurately with your rotary cutter and stitch a precise quarter inch seam allowance, you can do this exciting class.  

Student Requirements:

The optional kit contains thirteen (13) fabric squares of 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches.

Choose 1 of 3 optional kits:

• Summer scene with tree(s),
• Autumn scene with tree(s) or
• Winter scene with tree(s) without leaves.

 

• Basic Sewing Supplies
• Fabric requirements (If optional fabric kit is not purchased):
  13-14 squares of 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches depicting/suggesting nature:
  o Foreground: 4 squares
  o Middle ground: 3 squares
  o Leaves: 3 or 4 squares and
  o Sky: 3 or 4 squares
  Use a picture or photo as inspiration for the fabric choices.
  If unsure about your fabric choices, take a photo and send it to me via WhatsApp or e-mail; or contact me at the Festival the day before the class to approve your fabric choices.
• Everyone must bring additional scraps of textured fabric (even curtain or upholstery fabric) for the trunk and branches, even if you purchased a kit.
• Neutral thread (medium grey/brown).
• Twelve (12) squares (8 inches x 8 inches) of stiff paper or cardboard (use cardboard from used fruit boxes) – on which to arrange the small pieces
• Optional: five (5) cheap small paper/plastic bowls for the sorting of small pieces (to prevent small 1-inch x 1-inch pieces lying all over the place)
• A sheet to pin work in progress, +/- 30 inches x 30 inches
• Inch quilt ruler
• Cutting mat and rotary cutter with a new blade
• Quilt ruler
• Sewing Machine in good working order;
  o Quarter-inch presser foot to stitch ¼ inch seam
• Extension cord, 15 amp plug or adaptor, surge protector plug
